Acol Bidding System as described in http://rgb.anu.edu.au/Bridge/Bidding/Systems/Acol.
Somebody made this overview of acol bidding system and put it onto newsgroups apparently on Nov 30 09:55 1988
ii) open the higher of touching suits except when holding hearts and spades when open 1H.
prefer a mjor suit over a 1C opening unless holding considerable extra strength.
1H : 1S Now 1NT rebid = 15+ GF. Rebids by responder at 2-level NF over 2C/D/H by opener. 3-level rebids are GF.
we show stoppers rather than ask for stoppers.
3H : 4D = strong H raise 3H : 4C/D = cue, H agreed.
1H : 2C 1H : 1S 1H : 1S 1H : 2C 2D = F1 2D = NF 3H = I 3H = GF
1H : 2C Bid 2D with x see 11. 1S : 2H
? AJTxx 3H = I AQx Kxxx
1C : 1H
2D : 2H/3C = not encouraging
2S = 4SF (GF) 2NT = I 3D = F1 3H = GF as opener has reversed
1H : 1S
2D : 3C
3D : 3H = slam oriented. Now 3NT by opener is a trump cue.
1H : 3H
3NT = choice of contracts.
1C : 1NT = 8-10, no 4cM 1D/M: 1NT = 6-9. 1m : 2NT = 11-12, no 4cM 1m : 3NT = 13-15, no 4cM, denies good 4c support if maximum. 1M : 3M = limit raise, 10-12. 1M : 3NT = 12.5-14, balanced raise to 4M. Now, new suit (NS) is a singleton. eg. 1S : 3NT 4D : 4S 4NT = partner please cue, 4D showed a 1c. Direct 4NT is KCB. 1M : 2NT = 15+ HCP and trump support. Opener usually relays with 3C and then responder bids: 3D = short diamonds. 3oM = short oM. 3M = short clubs. 4M = 15-16 balanced raise. 3NT = 17+ HCP, balanced raise - suggests cue. Alternatively, with a minimum hand and a shortage, opener may bid 3D, 3oM or 3M in a similar way. After any of these sequences, either partner may sign off, cue or KCB.
1M : double jump shift = a splinter bid of 11-14 HCP. It shows a
singleton in the suit bid. 1m : 3M 1H : 3S/4C/4D 1S : 4C/D/H These are the only "splinter" auctions.
Jump shifts show a very strong slam oriented hand with 16+ HCP or the equivalent, based on either very strong own suit or a good suit with 4+ card support for opener. They must not be two suiters. After the jump shift, responder shows which hand type is held by rebidding as follows:
To allow responder to complete the description of his hand, opener bids the STEP unless has a semi-solid suit or a big 2-suiter.
egs. 1C : 2H
2S = step. 2NT = two suiter 6+ clubs and 5+ spades. 3C = strong 6+ suit. Minimum of KQJ9xx. 1H : 3D 3H = step. 3NT = discouraging, probably minimum with 1c D. Exception since substitution not needed to show 2-suiter.
Exceptions:
1NT rebid = 15-16, systemically denies a 4cM that could have been
shown at the 1-level. Now, 2 suit = NF unless reverse. 2NT = GF, interest in contract other than 3NT, but not genuine 2-suiter. 3 suit = Natural GF.
Jump 2NT rebid = 17-18, systemically denies 4cM that could have been
shown at 1-level. Now, 3C = Wolff sign-off, which forces 3D. Continuations: Rebid in M is sign-off. Rebid in unbid M shows values and concern about unbid suit. 3NT shows 4oM unless impossible, then shows concern about other M. Both continuations which show concern imply a fit for opener's minor. eg. 1C : 1S 2NT : 3C 3D : 3NT = impossible to have 4cH thus shows concern about H's. Typically 4-1-4-4 or 4-2-3-4. 3D or higher = GF. 4NT = blackwood.
Non-jump 2NT rebid = 15-20, GF not willing to commit hand to 3NT.
Jump 3NT rebid from 2-level =15-16 and a doubleton in responder's suit.
Jump 3NT rebid from 1-level = 19-20 and NO interest in other likely games.
1M : 2M = 5-9, new suit now is long suit trial. Further raise to 3M is pre-emptive. 1any : 1M 2M : 2NT = game try or better (F). With maximum bid past 3M; with minimum, rebid "any" or 3M with 4 trumps.
Four hand types after 1-level response:
If a simple bid in the JS is 100%F then type(1) is excluded, Note: Rebid at 1-level is not regarded as 100% F.
(1) Powerful two suiter ("good suit of own")
eg. AQJxx 1C : 1H Q 2S x AKJ9xx
(2) GF hand with strong support for responder's suit - bidding a fragment:
eg. AKx 1C : 1H AQxx 2S Corollory: 1C : 1H x 4H = balancedish 19-20 pts. AJT9x
(3) If responder has rebid at the one level (ie 2NT NF) then
19-20 balanced not wanting to commit hand to 3NT => 3+ support and/or goodish 5 card suit of own. eg. (a) AKx 1C : 1H (b) x 1H : 1S KQx 2S AJT9x 3C Ax KQx ATxx AJx
(4) If (and ONLY If) JS to 2-level, a hand with a long strong minor.
eg. x 1C : 1H xx 2S AKx AKQJxxx Responses to a Single JumpShift by opener: ------------------------------------------
2S : 2NT 3C = type(4). 3D = type(3). 3H = type(2). 3S = type(1).
3C : 3D = D value, denies 3cH or 5cS.
3H = 3cH. 3S = 5cS, denies 3cH. 3NT = unable to make a cheaper bid.
A rebid of 3NT by opener shows hand type(3). ie: GUARANTEES either
a 5cH suit or 3cM support for responder's major. eg. 1H : 1S 3D : 3H 3S = S set, hand type(2). 3NT = hand type(3) only 4cH thus 3cS. Over which 4C/D/H are cues for S. 4C/H = hand type(3) with 5cH. Hearts are set. To jumpshift to the 3-level when a simple bid is 100% F shows either hand type(2) or hand type(3). eg. 1C : 1H 3D : 3H 3NT = 19-20 with 3cH. Further bidding assumes H set. Other = type(2), H's set. To jumpshift to 3-level with type(3) when could have JS to 2-level denies control of the 2-level JS suit. eg. 1C : 1H 2S bid this on Kx but if swap SK and Cx then AQx bid 3D. KQx AJxxx Responder shouldn't raise JS suit above 3NT unless he has 5c support. eg. 1H : 1S with AJxx bit 3NT not 4D. If opener 3D : xx has types (1) or (2) he'll QJxx bid again. xxx 1C : 1S 3H : 4H exception, only shows 4cH but guarantees 5+S. Opener with first example in (3) can convert to 4S. After a Two Level Response: --------------------------- A jumpshift is a fragment and sets responder's suit as trumps. eg. 1D : 2C with x 3H AJx AKxxx KJxx.
(a) Into a new suit = void and slam interest, sets responer's suit as trumps.
egs. 1D : 2C AJx 1C : 1H 4H - 3S/4D = void. AQxxxx KJxx.
(b) Rebid of minor suit opened = strong 6c suit, plus 4c support for
responder's suit, good high card strength. Sequences are: 1C : 1D/H/S and 1D : 1H/2/2C related 1D : 1H 4C 4D 1NT : 4D = 6cH + 4cD.
These sequences agree responder's suit and usually initiate cue bidding.
Single JS is always a fragment.
Double JS is always a void. (setting opener's last bid suit as trumps)
eg. 1C : 1H 1S : 3D = fragment, 4cS support. 4D = void, 4cS support. Fragments =========
A fragment shows control of the fragment suit (ie either A or K). A possible exception is a fragment after a 1-level response where on RARE occasions opener may be forced to fragment without control. A fragment guarantees 4c support for the last bid suit.
After 1m : 1S, with a hand which would have qualified for a type(4) JS you must find another bid.
eg. 1C : 1S 2D = with eg. hand in (4). 3C = marginal JS hand. 3NT = Pray.
The 1NT opening shows a balanced hand of 12-14HCP with no 5 card major, unless Qxxxx or worse. Responses are:
2C = Stayman. Types of Hands:-
(i) weak going to pass opener's reply. (ii) balanced hand with 4cM, at least I but no slam interest. (iii) strong GF with 5+ minor. Rebids 3C/D over opener's response. (iv) slam interest 6-4 in M's
2D/H = transfers. New suit rebid is GF. Now jump to 4M shows very mild slam interest. Jump in NS is a splinter with slam interest. (6331, 7321 shapes).
2S = range probe. Types of Hands:-
(i) I hand to 3NT w/o 4cM. (ii) Strong balanced hand, slam interest. (iii) 4441 hand slam interest.
2NT = forces 3C. Types of Hands:-
(i) Hand that wants to play 3C or 3D (weak). (ii) Slam interested single suited M hand. Rebids 3M, over which 3NT is a cue.
3C/D = I hand to 3NT with goodish 6c minor.
3H/S = GF, fragment in bid M. Either 5-4 or 6-4 in the minors.
Bid of other M asks responder to bid 5c+ minor. Raise of M suggests playing Moysian.
4C/D = TEXAS, no slam interest, but creates a forcing auction
typically 9-13 pts.
4H/S = hand not interested in defending, to play.
1NT : 2C 2D : 2H/S = weak. Inference is 5cM bid and 4cOM. 1NT : 2C 2H : 2S = weak. Inference is have 5c minor also. Opener bids 2NT for minor. 1NT : 2S 2NT = minimum. Now 3C is Baron (slam interest). higher = maximum. Baron response. 1NT : 2C bid : with 6-4 in M's ( & slam) rebid 6cM at 3 level, unless opener bids it, then jump to 4 minor showing a control in the suit.
If the 1NT opening is doubled:- (A) In Direct Seat pass = forces XX, either to play or to show touching suits. XX = forces 2C, responder has a single suiter. 2C/D = hopping suits. 2H/S = natural, prepared to compete to 3 level. 2NT = artificial GF, usually big 2 suiter. 3C+ = pre-emptive. (B) In Balancing Seat opener should pass, then XX = forces 2C, responder has a single suiter. 2C/D/H= this suit plus a higher ranking suit.
(A) Natural Overcall All doubles at 2-level are takeout unless a penalty pass has been made. Pass of XX, to play 1NT redoubled, being classified as a penalty pass. After 3-level overcall, double is values and a new suit is natural and forcing. Except after 2NT for two known suits. (B) Conventional Overcall Double shows values, suggesting ability to penalty double at least one of "their suits". It creates a forcing auction. Doubles by opener as described in (A) above; but all later doubles by responder are penalty. Responder with a hand not interested in penalty doubling opponents employs reverse lebensohl or passes and then later doubles which is for takeout. Bidding their suit is takeout. If the two suits are known the higher cue, if economical, suggests length in higher unbid suit. (C) Reverse Lebensohl Simple 2 and 3 level bids = NF, except 3C is forcing. Slow auctions (when have choice) through 2NT shows a stopper. "Slow = Shows".
Opener bids:-
pass = denies support after transfer, denies a 4cM after Stayman OR a hand which intends to pass the redouble. XX = happy to accept transfer, shows at least one 4cM after Stayman. Suggests may be best if partner were declarer. bid = acceptance of a transfer shows support, and 2M after Stayman shows 4cM. To bid shows some reason to be declarer. 2D over Stayman shows 5 diamonds. Responder bids :- over pass : redouble if would have sat a penalty redouble by opener otherwise bid normally. over anything else: bid normally. If responder has Staymanned on a weak "running" hand he rebids 2D over the pass or XX by opener.
23+ balanced or 9+ tricks in a Major or any GF.
2D = waiting suit = natural goodish suit 5+, 3 of a minor shows a good 6c suit. 2NT = 7-9 pts Q's and J's, at most one king, balanced.
step 1 = no control ) no A or K of trumps
2 = 3rd round ) A or K but no Q 3 = 2nd round AQ or KQ 4 = 1st round AK 5 = 1st round AKQ
Note:- combine steps 1 & 2 if next step is game in trumps.
2M : 2NT = raise of opener's major
3M = would have bid 2NT in standard.
2M : 2NT NS = asking bid. if it is in trumps the steps are:
step 1 : xxx step 2 : Qx, xxxx step 3 : Qxx, Jxxx step 4 : A or K step 5 : A or K -> length step 6 : 2 of A,K,Q.
3S : 4NT = trump cue, spades set.
3NT : 4C = baron
4D/H = transfer 4S = both minors.
The auction is "forcing" at all levels. Thus X's are penalty ( in direct seat) and the pass is takeout. Responders pass of intervention = would have bid 2D.
2D/H = aspro twos. (see on) 2S = 6-11 points 5+S and 5+ other suit or 6cS and 4c minor. Responses: - 2NT = GF enquiry. Opener bid 2nd suit, if at 4 level shows 6 in bid suit and 5cS. 3S shows 6cS and 4c minor. Over 4C opener bids 4D with diamonds, else cues. 3NT shows 6cS and 5c other. Now 4C asks for second suit with 4S showing clubs. - all bids of Clubs AND 3D by respondr are convertible. - 3H = NF but encouraging. - Double by responder = penalty. Double by opener says this is my second suit.
2D = MULTI "weak 2" in Major. Free and Easy. Response of 2NT says bid second suit if you have one. All bids convertible to opener's major. 2H/S = Aspro. Good 8-13. Now 2NT is game try, after which: 3C/D = minimum to average. 3M = minor shortage, max. 3OM = shortage, max. 3NT = 5422 14 count. 4C/D = 6c suit, max.
4 card major and a 5+ car minor, 11-15 points.
2D : 2H = relay (13+) 2S = to play 2NT = puppet to 3C 3C/4C/5C = convertible to opener's minor 3D/H = 6+ suit, 10-12 3S = pre-emptive, opener may bid game with super-max 4D = to play if minor is D, to play 5C if minor is C. Opener may raise D's with a super max. Responses to 2H --------------- 2H : 2S = relay(13+) 2NT = puppet to 3C 3C/4C/5C = convertible to opener's minor 3D/S = 6+ suit, 10-12 3H = pre-emptive, opener may bid game with super-max 4D = to play if minor is D, to play 5C if minor is C.
2D : 2NT 3C : pass/3D/3H = weakish hand, long suit (to play) 3S = mild game try in S's (opener's major), 10-12pts. 3NT = "game try" in NT, support for both m's, 12-13pts. 4C = 7+ C's reasonable hand (invitational). 5C = 7+ C's strong hand (to play). Note: 2NT puppet over 2H is similar (3H is a mild game try over 3C).
2D : 2H (relay) 2S = min. Now the step(2NT) is a GF relay; responses up one step. Maximums: 2NT = minor is C's. (all higher bids show D's). Now 3C = relay. 3C = LS (lower shortage). Now 3D = relay. 3D = 5422 ) 3H = 5431 ) 3S = 6421 ) HS (higher shortage) 3NT = 6430 ) 4C = 7420 ) 4D+ = 7411 ) Notes: 1. Responses to relay over 2H opening is identical except responses are one step higher. 2. If open 2D/H with 5440 shape (void in other M) treat as a 5431 hand, (to later cue singleton shows a void) 3. Continuations after shape showing are natuarl and 4NT is Blackwood.
2D : 2H 2S : 3C/5C = convertible 3D/H = 6c suit, 13-14. 3S = invitational 13-14. 4C = convertible, still inviting 5m. Similar rebids over a 2H opening, 2H : 2S 2NT : 3D = convertible.
4 of the shorter minor is a slam try, which does NOT set trumps if it occurs at the end of a relay sequence. In response the asproer should bid: step 1 = A and K, or neither A,K in longest suit. step 2 = " in next longest suit. etc. Notes:- - Do not include singleton suits. - If you go through all the suits then the next "round" is denial cueing for Q's.
Good 20 (including 5 card suit) to 22pts. May include a 5cM.
3C = puppet to 3D, unless holding a 5cM. 3D/H = transfers. 3S = both minors, at LEAST GF. 3NT = 4 cards in BOTH majors, game (but not slam) values. 4C/D = single suited slam hands. 4H = ??????????????????? 4S = ???????????????????
3H = either (i) 4cS, denies 4cH -or- (ii) 5cS and 4cH. With interest in hand type (ii), opener bids 3S over which: 3NT = hand type (i). 4C/D = cue, slam interest (ii). 4H = only game interest(ii). 3S = 4cH, denies 4cS. 3NT = to play, could not bid directly. 4NT = simple Blackwood. Except:- 2NT : 3C 3D : 3S 3NT : 4H = slam try, 4-4 in majors.
3C/D/H/S are normal pre-empts, denies more than one A or K outside trumps and denies two aces. In response a new suit is natural and forcing and 4NT is Keycard Blackwood.
(1) If pre-emptor doubles, opponent's cue bid of his suit then this requests partner NOT to lead this suit. (2) Transferring Captain's Hat: If opponents X a pre-empt or weak jump overcall, then XX = unsure whether to compete or defend. That is a hand with a fair fit for partner but some defense. (3) Funny NT's and Suits: If opponents X or cue-bid over a pre-empt or non-vulnerable weak jump overcall then:- (a) Funny NT = any dubious NT call, partner to treat NT as natural until obvious otherwise. A funny NT shows a good fit for partner but next to no defense. Corollory: a direct raise shows SOME defense. (b) Funny Suit= A new suit may be lead directing, or of no significance or genuine. If the new suit is doubled (for penalties) the pre-emptor MUST not pass.
Opening 5H or 5S asks responder to raise one-level for each top honour he holds in that suit.
7+ Major, little defense, 5-6 losers depending on vulnerability.
Same responses apply after jump overcall to 4H or 4S after opposition have opened. eg. cue of their suit is exclusion cue.
7+ Major, one or two aces, 4-4.5 losers, no void, fewer than 5 controls.
Examples: x AKJTxxx x AKJxxxxx x AJTxxxx xx KQx AJT9 Kx QJ x Responses --------- step 1 = 2 key cards and 3+ possible cover cards. step 2 = 0-1 key cards, sign-off. step 3 = 3 key cards. step 4 = 4 key cards. Opener's Rebids --------------- Bid of new suit is an asking bid. Substituting 4NT for the suit shut out by responder. Responses are: step 1 = no control. step 2 = 2nd round control. step 3 = 1st round control. step 4 = 1st and 2nd round control. By making an asking bid opener is usually indicating that one keycard is missing. Bid of 5NT indicates all the controls are held, invites responder to bid seven if he believes we have enough tricks.
(1) Cheapest cue bid is made. (2) Cue aces first, kings second. On occasions, especially if you are known to be weak, it is necessary to cue a second round control before first round control in that suit has been shown or denied. (3) Below game, return a cue only if slam appears possible - with a poor minimum return to the trump suit. If partner cues again, or cues above game you must return the cue if possible. (4) To cue above five of the trump suit is a try for seven. (5) If either partner is able to judge the correct final contract he should bid it as soon as possible. (6) If a cue bid is doubled, redouble shows second round control of that suit, to pass is neutral conveying some interest. Grand Slam Force ---------------- 5NT is only GSF if a JUMP to 5NT has been made. After a 2C opening GSF is the preferred meaning over a trump asking bid. Responses: Suit 0 Hon 1 Hon 2 Hon 3 Hon ---- ----- ----- ----- ----- Clubs 6C 6C 6NT 7C Diamonds 6D 6C 6NT 7C Hearts 6H 6C 6D 7C Spades 6S 6C 6D 7C
A direct raise of an agreed major to the 5-level shows interest in six, but suggest trump weakness. Partner should accept IF his own trumps are strong. EXCEPT: When there is exactly one unbid suit (or when the opponents have bid exactly one suit) when it means bid six if you can control the unbid suit.
(1) When a suit is agreed or a JUMP to 4NT agrees a suit, 4NT is KCB. (2) ANY JUMP to 4NT is BW, the jump agreeing the last naturally bid suit. (3) 4NT is NOT BW if the 4NT bidder has cue-bid or if 4NT could have "sensibly" been bid at an earlier opportunity as BW. (4) 4NT is BW if it is bid at the first opportunity after a suit has been agreed.
5C = 0 or 3 key cards. 5D = 1 or 4 key cards. 5H = 2 key cards without the trump queen. 5S = 2 key cards with the trump queen. 5NT = 2 key cards with a void. A bid of 6 suit then asks responder to bid seven with a void in that suit. 6 suit ranked below trumps = 1 key card with void in bid suit. 6 trumps = 1 key card with void in suit ranked above trumps. - After 5C or 5D, the cheapest non-trump bid (ie step) asks for trump queen. Without the Q rebid in trump suit, with the Q cue a feature (ie a K or maybe a Q in one of partner's suits). - After asking for the trump Q, a bid of 5NT asks responder to bid a feature. - 5NT over a direct response of 5C/D/H/S asks for kings. egs. 1S : 4S 1S : 2D 4NT : 5C 4NT = KCB in Diamonds. 5D : 5S 5NT = bid a feature. 1NT : 4NT = simple BW. 1S : 2S 3H : 4S 4NT = KCB in Spades. 3H not a cue but a "game try".
XX = 9.5+ pts. Denies primary trump support. All subsequent doubles are penalty. new suit at one level = F1. new suit(non-jump) at two level = NF. 1NT = 7-10. 2NT = limit raise or better. jumps into new suit = "fit showing" (below game). 3NT = to play. (2) Opponents Overcall Naturally --------------------------------- new suit at one level = F1. new suit(non-jump) at two-level = NF, "constructive free bid". X = takeout up to 4D. Doubles of 4H and especially 4S must be prepared for partner to pass. cues= good H.C.P. raise at least to the next level of opener's suit. Except a JUMP cue specifically to the 3 level is a stopper ask for 3NT. Jump cues to the 4-level and double jump cues show a void in the cue suit. jumps into new suit = "fit showing" (below game). 1NT = 7-10. 2NT = 11-12. 3NT = 13-15, no interest in other games. (3) Direct Raises ----------------- A direct raise of opener's suit tends to be pre-emptive. (4) Over 2NT for the Minors ---------------------------- If the opponents bid 2NT for the minors then: 3C = limit raise or better. 3D = GF, 5+ cards in other major. 3M = 2.5M raise. Double says all future doubles are penalty. Generally, if opponents make a two-suited overcall and both suits are known, cue of lower ranking suit is a good raise of opener's suit and a cue of the higher ranking suit shows a strong hand with the 4th suit. (5) Constructive Free Bids --------------------------- After intervention, bids at the 2 level and bids at the 3-level (iff the intervention was 2NT or higher) are NOT 100% forcing but are "constructive free bids". They show from a GOOD 8pts to a hand just short of a GF. Maximum of say 12pts or slightly more if minor suit interest. The auction continues as if responder has made a simple 2-over-1 bid with no intervention, except that opener may pass with a bare minimum AND the following specific exceptions: 1D : (1S) : 2H : (P) and 1H : (1S) : 2D : (P) 3C = NF. 3C = NF. But note, if 1S is raised to 2S then 3C becomes forcing (normal). Corollory: A new suit or 2NT rebid by responder after he has made a takeout double is GF. eg. 1C : (1S) : X : (P) 2C : (P) : new suit = GF. 2NT = GF. (6) Fit Showing Jumps ---------------------- Apply after partner has opened AND R.H.O. has made a bid (including double). Now new suit jumps guarantee 9+ cards in the two suits. The auction is forcing to the next level of the "anchor" suit. Except, jumps into game are to play. Note: Fit Showing Jumps also apply afer partner has overcalled and R.H.O. has bid. (7) Enemy Pre-emption ---------------------- 1Y : (3 suit) : cue = raise of Y. 4NT = KCB. 1 minor : (4 suit) : 4NT = general slam try in opened minor(F). cue = freaky two suiter. 1 Major : (4 suit) : 4NT = general slam try in opened Major WITH control in opponents suit. 5Maj = slam try in Major WITHOUT control. cue = freaky two suiter. Other responses are described in sections (1) to (6). (8) High Level Competition --------------------------- General aim over pre-empts is to get to correct game not to bid "guessing" slams. Thus in the auctions not covered in (7) above, the cue-bid's major aim is to get to the correct game ie "choice of game cue bids". Hands with more than possible slam interest make a takeout double to begin with if one is available. eg. 1C : (1H) : X : (3H) 4H = choose a game. 4NT = choose a minor suit game. X = hand not strong enough to insist on game OR a hand which is going to slam if any encouragement from partner is forthcoming. (9) Game Try Double -------------------- When there is no suit bid available, double is purely a game try. eg. 1S : (2H) : 2S : (3H) X = game try. When a trial suit is available, double is a game try but also conveys co-operation if responder chooses to pass (ie good high card strength, two plus cards in opponents suit) eg. 1S : (2D) : 2S : (3D) X = game try, but happy to defend if responder passes. (10) Competitive Double ------------------------ We have agreed a suit and opponents have bid and raised a suit or if a repeat takeout double is made in the direct seat. A double in these situations shows extras and a defensive hand. Its says I've got too much to pass. egs. 1H : (1S) : 2H : (2S) X with AQx KQxx Jxx AJx. 1C : (1H) : X : (P) 2C : (2H) : X with KJxx Qxx Axxx Jx. (11) NT rebids by Opener when Responder has made a Takeout Double ------------------------------------------------------------------ Keep up to strength. 1NT rebid shows 15-16. Non-jump rebid of 2NT shows 15-16, but may be a good 14 (double stopper) or ugly 17. eg. with KJx after 1S : (1S) : X : (P) ATxxx ? xxx bid 3D and hope for the best. Ax (12) Other Auctions -------------------- (a) 1 minor : (1NT) : 2C = Stayman, not enough to penalty double. (b) 1S : (X) : P : (2D) and 1D : (X) : P : (2S) 2NT = takeout. 2NT = takeout. (c) Other takeout Doubles 1H : (P) : 2D : (3C) X = takeout. 1H : (P) : 1S : (3C) X = takeout, but more a good hand, with 3-5-4-1 bid 3D. 1H : (1S) : 2C : (2S) X = takeout.
(a) simple bid of a suit = up to 10 pts. 1NT = 7-10. But occasionally may have a good 6 pts and an awkward hand. 2NT = 11-12. - With a choice tend to respond in a suit rather than NT's. - To respond in a minor doesn't deny a passed over Major suit, especially if the opponent's suit is in between the minor and major suits. eg. after (1H) : X : (P) : ? may decide to bid 2 of a minor then compete with 2S over the opponent's expected 2H with 4-4. (b) Jumpshift response = 9-11 pts and reasonable 4cM but if in a minor will always have a goodish 5c suit and 10-11 pts.(NF). (c) Double jumpshift response to 3-level = intermediate, a point stronger than (b) with a good 5c suit. (NF). eg. after (1D) : X : (P) : ? bid 3H on: Jxx KQT9x Axx Jx. (d) Cue by responder = forcing to agreement, responder guarantees another bid. Thus there is no need for doubler to jump unnecessarily. eg. (1D) : X : (P) : 2D KJxx (P) : 2H : (P) : 3H = NF eg. QTxx xx Axx. Continuations: - Immediate 2NT by either player is GF. - Return cue by doubler is a slam try with control of cue suit, typically 4441 hand. - Jumpshift by doubler shows strong single suited hand, too strong to overcall originally. - Jumpshift by cue-bidder shows strong single suiter, slam interest but NO control of the cue suit. (e) Jump cue by responder = strong single-suiter, slam interest with control of the cue suit. (2) Further Competition after a Negative Double ------------------------------------------------ (a) (1m) : X : (1M) : X = penalty suggestion, 4c or &H weakish 5c suit in M. 2m = normal cue, as for (1)(d). Ignore 1M. 2M = natural, good 5c suit in M as for (1)(c). (1C) : X : (1D) : 2C = natural over short C, o/w cue. 2D = normal cue. X = responsive. (b) If opponents bid 2 suits, NT guarantees a stopper in the 1st bid suit but not the second. As doubler may be a little short of an opening bid if he has good shape, ranges are: 1NT = 8-11. 2NT = 12-13. (3) Rebids by Negative Doubler after a Simple Response ------------------------------------------------------- (a) Rebid in a M shows considerable extra strength, although not a 100% forcing. But if responder has replied 1NT, showing definite values, a rebid in a M is effectively a GF. (b) Rebid in a minor shows a good hand, but doesn't guarantee as much as a rebid in a M. Doubler could possibly have: - and after (1S) : X : (P) : 1NT QTxx (P) : ? KQTxx bid 2D. KJxx. (c) Jump rebid = GF single suiter. (d) Cue-bid = general GF, not a genuine single suiter. (e) If the doubler, through competition, is forced to make a non-jump rebid in a M at the three level then the auction is GF. (f) Cheapest NT = 19-21. Continuations as if rebid 1NT or 2NT in a competitive auction. (4) When 2NT is also available as Takeout ------------------------------------------ Partner hasn't shown any values. (If partner shows values then 2NT is natural). 2NT rather than double shows extra length in the bid suit and/or four cards in the lower ranking outstanding suit. If an unbid suit can be bid below 2NT then 2NT alway show extra length in bid suit. Examples: (1D) : 2C : (2D) : P (P) : 2NT = extra clubs and preference for H's (lower unbid) (1D) : P : (1S) : P (2S) : P : (P) : 2NT = longer C's than H's. X = hearts at least as long as C's. (1S) : 2C : (2S) : P (P) : 2NT = with 5c C's and 4c D's shape 2-2-4-5. ie maybe not a 6th club. Summary: 2NT = extra length and emphasis on lower unbid suit. X = normal takeout, when 2NT is available shows at least equal length in unbid suits. Same principles apply if auction at one-level and 1NT overcall can't be natural (passed hand). (5) Other Doubles - When Opponents have opened the Bidding ----------------------------------------------------------- (a) (1H) : P : (1NT) : X = takeout double of 1H. (b) (1S) : P : (P) : X (2S) : X = penalty. 2NT = takeout. (c) (1H) : P : (P) : X (2H) : X = penalty. 2NT = minors. (d) (1NT) : P : (2C/D/H) : X = would have doubled 1NT for penalty. (e) (1H) : P : (P) : X (2D) : X = penalty. (f) (1H) : 2C : (2D) : X = takeout, spades with club tolerance. 2H = cue raise. 3D = GF. When ehere is only one unbid suit the higher cue is a general GF. (6) Opponent's Pre-empt ------------------------- When opener competes over a pre-empt he assumes you have a useful 7-8 count. (a) After 3 of a minor - natural bidding and continuations. X = takeout. bid = minimum opening hand 6c suit. 3NT = to play. (b) After 3 Major - responsive 3NT after a takeout double. (3M) : X : (P) : 3S = 0-8. 3NT = Responsive. Will be 0-8 if unable to bid 3S or 4m. 4m = 0-8, 5c minor. Game = 8+, 5c+ suit. 4NT = to play. eg. with AJxx after (3H) : X : (P) : ? xx bid 3NT and continue with 4S over 4m Axx to show exactly 4cS and game going Qxxx values. (c) After 4C/D/H - double is takeout. Response of 4NT after (4H) : X asks doubler to pick a minor. (d) After 4S - double is takeout but doubler must be prepared for responder to pass on balanced hands. 4NT after (4S) : X says pick a suit. An immediate 4NT over 4S is "unconditional" takeout.
(1) When partner overcalls, assume he has a minimum opening hand, although he may have up to 16 or 17 pts. (2) Cue-bid of Opponent's suit - if their opening bid guarantees (a) less than 3 cards then cue = natural 2NT = minors (b) 3 or more cards then cue = highest plus lowest unbid suits. 2NT = lower unbid suits. Exception, in 4th seat: (1m) : P : (1NT) : 2m = both Majors. (3) Jump overcalls are weak, but when vulnerable will have a minimum opening hand with good shape. (4) Direct 1NT overcall = 15-18. Responses unchanged including transfer into their suit. If doubled, as if 12-14 NT was doubled in balancing seat. Except cue = strong single suiter and 2NT is GF two suiter. (5) Responses to an Overcall ----------------------------- - Direct raises tend to be pre-emptive. 1NT = 8-11. 2NT = 12-13. 3NT = 14-15. New suit (non-jump) = constructive free bid (NF). Jumpshift into new suit = good 6c suit, GF. But Jumpshift when R.H.O. has bid = fit showing. Cue = good H.C.P. raise, as if we'd opened and opponents had overcalled. OR. If R.H.O. had passed, could be any GF which is not single suited. If R.H.O. has bid a third suit, to cue that suit is the general GF. Examples: (1D) : 1H : (P) : 2D = good H.C.P. raise or non-single suited GF. 2S = GF with 6c Spades. 3D = stopper ask. 4D = good raise with Diamond void. (1D) : 1H : (X) : XX = includes general GF hands. 2D = good H.C.P. raise. 2S = fit showing, typically 5cS & 4cH. (6) Protective Bidding in 4th Seat ----------------------------------- After (1 bid) : P : (P) : ? 1NT = 11-14 continuations as if opened 1NT. X = assume opening hand but may be less with good shape. bid = 9-15. 2NT = 20-22. Usual continuations. Jumpshift = 14-16, good 6c suit. Not quite good enough to double then bid 6c suit. (7) Jump Cue-Bid ----------------- - Shows solid seven card minor which is angling for 3NT. - About 12-17 pts. - Responder bids 3NT with a stopper (to play). With a poor hand bids his weaker minor to play. All other bids are cues (minor set) and 4NT is simple BW. 5C is to play 5 of a minor. (8) Opponents open a Weak Two in a Major ----------------------------------------- X = takeout. Now reverse Lebensohl. 2NT = minors takeout. cue = bid 3NT with a stopper. Strong Minor. With a poor hand and no stopper, responder bids four of his weaker minor. 4C = GF 2-suiter C + OM. 4D = GF 2-suiter D + OM. (9) Opponents open a Multi Two Diamonds - assume weak two in Major ------------------------------------------------------------------- X = values, at least tolerance for BOTH majors. Now reverse lebensohl. 2M = natural overcall. But possibly only strong 4c iff short in OM. 2NT = minors takeout. 3 suit = natural. 4C = GF 2-suiter C + S. 4D = GF 2-suiter D + S. - With GF 2-suiter with hearts can (relatively) safely start with - Same structure over (2D) : P : (2M) : ? as can't assume bid M is opener's Major. (10) Opponents Flannery ------------------------ (2D) : X = values, at least 5 cards (total) in the Majors. 2H = takeout. 2S = natural. 2NT = minors. (11) Over 3NT Gambling ----------------------- 4 minor = takeout SHORT in this minor. X = values, penalty oriented, creates a forcing auction.
(a) Double of 1NT shows about 15+ pts, maybe a couple less with a good suit or good texture. Responder to the doubler has a forcing pass available if the auction is BELOW 2S. If opponents run to 2H or below, pass by responder shows some values. All future doubles are penalty. (b) ASPRO (1NT) : 2C = Hearts + another. 2D = Spades + minor. Responses: step = forcing enquiry, doesn't promise or deny values. 2M = to play. 2NT = GF, 4+ support for M. 3 suit= inivitational, natural. Responses to step: "Rebid M" = 5+ suit. Now 2NT is invitational (natural); the step in a suit is to play in Asproer's 2nd suit. Higher = 5+ suit only 4cM. Bidding 2NT to show 5+ diamonds. A new suit by responder at 3 level is weak escape (unles step). Examples: (1NT) : 2D : (pass) : 4C/5C = convertible. (1NT) : 2D : (P) : 2H (P) : 2S : (P) : 2NT = invitational, natural. 3C = step, to play in minor. 3H = weak escape. 2H. (c) Competition After We Aspro (1NT) : ASPRO : (step) : X = competitive values, would have bid step. Takeout unless Asproer's 2nd suit. (1NT) : ASPRO : (Higher than step) : X = penalty. New Suit = natural, NF. (1NT) : 2D : (bid) : 3C/4C = convertible to minor. (1NT) : 2C : (2S) : P (P) : X = good hand with spades (2nd suit). 2NT = takeout (always 5H).
Generally: Overlead honours - except with AK and a singleton lead the K and switch to singleton. 4th Best. From 3 small - varies: vs NT usually top unless partner's sut (and haven't supported) then low. vs Suit usually MUD unless partner's suit then low is often best giving count. 2nd best from 4 small (usually). Top from 5 small. SIGNALS ======= Generally: (a) WE LEAD : HONOUR give attitude unless cash out (count). LOW give count if can't beat dummy's card. (b) THEY LEAD : give count unless unimportant. (c) DISCARDS : first discard often attitude, later discards are count or random. When attitude in the suit led is KNOWN, give count (or possibly suit preference if obvious). If we lead and there is any doubt about the situation give attitude.
(1C) : X = 15/16+ Responses 1D = 0-5. bid = 5-8. jump = 9+ GF. 1D = Hearts + minor. All bids of Clubs convertible. 1H = 5+ Hearts. 1S = 4+ Spades, may be Canape. 1NT/2NT = minors. DEFENSE TO FORCING PASS ======================= (pass) as for precision except 1C = 16+ (1C/D) treat as if opened 1H/S in standard except can now bid 1H/1S as mini 2-suiter. ie: 4+S & 5+D bid 1H over 1C. (1H) X = 16+ and 2NT = 20-22. 1NT = 13-15. Normal continuations. 1S/2C/D/H = normal overcalls 11-15. Change of suit by responder is 100% forcing, analagous to after an opening bid. (1NT) treat as if opened standard 1NT, X=15+, (maybe good 14). After (1H) X 1S = 0-8. Nat. except 2C = 20+ unbal. Now 2D = 0-3/4. 1NT = 9-12/16+ balanced GF. 2C/D/H/S = 5+ suit, GF, 9+. 2NT = 13-15 balanced.
If a suit has been set then normal KCB. If no trump suit has been agreed, respond as for KCB but with only 4 "aces" with the Kings in opener's long suits being counted as trump Q's. So the step over 5C or 5D asks for long suit kings. Responses: rebid cheapest long suit denies any kings (usually 5S), rebid of 5NT show the king in the cheapest suit, wiht both kings bid a short suit, preferabley the fragment if economical. Examples: 2S : 2NT (*1) Cue, maybe 2nd round control. If 2nd round 3D : 4D denies 2nd round H control. 4S*1: 4NT*2 (*2) KCB in D's. 5C*3: 5D*4 (*3) No aces. (*4) To play, since D's set as trumps. Need to bid 5H to ask for S & D king. 2S : 2NT (*1) Blackwood. 4D : 4NT*1 (*2) No Aces. 5C*2: 5D*3 (*3) Ask for long suit kings. 5H*4: 5NT*5 (*4) Both kings either 5-2-6-0 or 5-1-6-1. 6C*6 (*5) grand slam try. (*6) 5-2-6-0 INTEREST in seven. 4NT OPENING =========== Responses: 5C = no ace. 5D/H/S/NT = ace of this suit. 6C = two aces. DOUBLING A SPLINTER BID ======================= 1st Priority = suggesting a save. Otherwise (if profitable save unlikely) says lead lower unbid suit or unbid suit if only one.
